Ugu farmers on the South Coast and inland around Harding sell cane, banana, macadamia, and timber farms to the state through PLAS grower programmes linked to the Sezela and Umzimkulu mills and through restitution settlements in Umzumbe and uMuziwabantu. Sugar cane along the coastal belt, bananas and macadamias in the frost-free valleys, commercial timber around Harding and Paddock, and smallholder cane and cattle in Umzumbe. Rainfall is high and the growing season year-round.
What the state has been buying
PLAS acquisitions have concentrated near the Sezela and Umzimkulu mills, and the Commission has settled claims inland. State interest is strongest for productive cane units that can be leased to emerging growers with mill support.
